Star Wars, revised

Jonathan has never seen Star Wars. Nevertheless, he knows all about Star Wars. That is, he knows most of the characters, and he thinks they're really, really cool. He can't wait for the day when he'll be allowed to watch the movies.

Until then, he's making do with his own imagination. In his most recent version of the story,

*spoiler alert*

Luke dies. (That's him in red, lying dead at Darth Vader and Yoda's feet.)

So . . . Star Wars, but no guns? :D

Seriously, I was going to reply to your other post that I think it's fair to let them pretend anything they'd be willing to read. When you read, you're pretending anyway, aren't you?

And then I thought, "well, how many video games have our kids seen? hundreds? and no guns? when their dads pretend to shoot people?"

And now Star Wars . . . I think it'd be hard to consistently say, "no guns". My $0.05. Or whatever the going rate is. ;)

btw, I might need to rethink the pretending and reading bit. A bit. Considering what I read. Heh. On the other hand . . .

I never said I was consistent. ;)

Seriously, now:

Star Wars has come about because of friends who watch it and then play it on the playground. Not much I can do about that.

As far as reading goes, I'm not sure if I follow that. Reading isn't quite the same thing as pretending. Also, I don't give them violent books to read; I don't think they'd be appropriate at age five.

Video games...no kidding. I actually object to the video games thing, but my husband (obviously) doesn't. And his perspective matters a lot, especially seeing as he's male. And a very good sort of male, too! :)

See, this is why I need a better philosophy. Clearly, the one I came into parenting with does not work!
