Homemade vanilla!

Six months ago I started the process of making my own vanilla. Crystal (from A Thrifty Mama) posted a tutorial that looked quite simple, and I was tired of paying outlandish prices for real vanilla! (Especially when I discovered that it actually had corn syrup in it...grr!)

Well, it certainly was simple! I followed the tutorial exactly, and today I bottled my very own, truly pure vanilla!

It smells heavenly. Thomas came out of his quiet time a moment ago and the first thing he asked was "Mommy, what is that really good smell?"

Why, 60 ounces of freshly bottled vanilla, dear!

Mmmm.

Phew, the Costco stuff has real sugar in it - never even thought to look. Good for you, that looks like a neat project!

Wowsa. You went crazy! I did another approach: I just use a small can with 4 beans in it, let is sit for 4 months and now I add a lil' more vodka once a week to keep it filled to the top. Tastes great in recipes and is the never ending bottle of deliciousness! I will put in new pods in another month or two.

Oh, this sounds amazing! I have been buying at Costco, but really wished there was another way. I wonder if I can get it to taste as good as the Williams Sonoma- sometimes I find that at Marshalls of all places.

Thanks for the tip!

Thanks! I'm going to make these for Christmas gifts!

Where can you buy whole vanilla beans for a reasonable price?

I'm giving a lot of these as gifts too, Jen. (That's why I did a lot at once, Ma Torg!) I purchased my beans here:

Oh, I can just imagine the smell already. Pure vanilla is quite heavenly to the senses. And sixty ounces for your first try, not bad! Those bottles look neat and fitting for your first homemade batch of vanilla by the way.
