Lenten conversation

"Thomas, Lent is soon, and it is really fun because we have oatmeal every morning!!!"
- Jonathan, age 4.5

Hmm. Gabe and I started the oatmeal Lenten tradition because we aren't particularly fond of it (especially every morning!) For us, it is a good chance to practice self denial. Apparently our children do not view it in quite the same way!

How cute. I've been trying to think of how to incorporate our children into our lenten practices...

We have oatmeal every morning normally, except on Sundays we have pancakes. What kind of oatmeal do you make? Steel cut is all we eat and it is delicious, especially with some fruit, honey, or brown sugar. Kurtis likes it with peanut butter.

Pamela, we've done many different kinds - quick, regular, steel cut, with all kinds of add ins...and we've come to the conclusion that Gabe and I just. don't. like. oatmeal. :)

LOL - in our house Gregory would be excited and Emma would moan and groan and carry on every single day for the entirety of Lent. Nathan would eat very little of it, but would have a ball smearing it all over his tray and clothes.

Matt and I have talked about doing this during Lent, but I'm not quite sure how I'll deal with getting Nathan to actually eat it. We have oatmeal once a week already and generally Nathan ends up starving about an hour after breakfast because he eats so little of it. And then there's Emma's moaning and groaning... although at least she's getting old enough that she can at least kind of understand the concept of taking it on as a Lenten sacrifice.

Although, really, it isn't much of a sacrifice for me (or Matt, for that matter) we both like oatmeal. Especially cooked overnight in the crock pot with homemade granola, raisins and milk on it. Perhaps if we do it for Lent I'll forgo the added stuff - that does seem more in the spirit of things, doesn't it.
